PROJECT PROFILE - STADIA

PETER MOKABA STADIUM

The Peter Mokaba Stadium is situated in Polokwane (formally Pietersburg) in the Limpopo Province and is being constructed for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

The roof over the West Stand consists of a Primary triangular tubular Girder with a free span of 170 meters and a mass of 460 tons.

All the circular hollow section tubing was imported from England and Japan as the sizes and wall thicknesses, ranging up to 600mm diameter with wall thickness of 40mm, is not manufactured in South Africa.

The actual roof structure is suspended below the primary girder and also consists of tubular section trusses with a total mass of 550 tons.

The primary girder is supported on two large circular concrete towers and the roof trusses around the towers are supported by tubular columns fixed to the concrete to give an impression of the Baobab tree which is indigenous to the area.

The steelwork was fabricated and fully assembled, disassembled, shot blasted and painted in Johannesburg and transported to site by road. Total number of loose components manufactured was 5020. The number of assembly bolts used was 31,510.

A temporary support structure and access ladders and walkways, weighing 110 tons, was designed and built to assemble the primary girder in its areal position and once assembled the structure was systematically lowered using hydraulic jacks with continuous surveying ensuring that the structure deflected as per the design requirement.

Special architecturally pleasing connections were incorporated into the girder top and diagonal chords at each splice point to give an uninterrupted feel to the tubes.

The structure was detailed with a methodology in place to ensure that the project could be fabricated and erected using available South African technology, plant and equipment.

ORLANDO STADIUM

This "training ground" for the 2010 World Cup was the first stadium completed for the event. Toblerone tubular trusses was erected all around the stadium covering some 40 000 seats. Four corner towers, also in tubular steel were also erected to provide access to the different floors for the spectators.

A truly unique stadium considering the project engineer's comments: "This stadium cost less than the V.A.T cost on some of the other 2010 stadiums"

COCACOLA PARK (ELLIS PARK)

In November 2007 Omni Struct Nkosi (Pty) Ltd, was awarded the prestigious contract of supplying and erecting the steel roof and seating support structure to the norhtern stand of this Historic Stadium.

All the roof steelwork was designed using round tubular members, ranging in size from 16 diameters to 457 diameters. Our 90 Lattice Boom link belt crane, with the support of one of our 30T truck Mount Tadano cranes, was used to erect this Architectural beauty.
